The festival takes place in September in São Paulo and Salvador with national premieres, the presence of filmmakers, and 50 audiovisual professionals from Africa and Brazil
The Mostra de Cinemas Africanos has just announced the highlights of its upcoming edition, which takes place in September 2024, from the 11th to the 18th in São Paulo (SP) and from the 18th to the 25th in Salvador (BA). This marks the 7th consecutive year of the only annual festival in Brazil dedicated exclusively to the exhibition of contemporary African films.
Abderrahmane Sissako, one of the most acclaimed filmmakers from the African continent and internationally awarded, will attend the Mostra de Cinemas Africanos 2024, premiering in Brazil his newest film Black Tea (2024). The film tells the story of a young woman from the Ivory Coast who falls in love with an older Chinese man after immigrating to Asia. The feature, which has garnered critical acclaim, was nominated for the Golden Bear award at the 74th Berlin International Film Festival.
Born in Mauritania, Sissako is known for films that explore globalization and migration. His first feature film, Heremakono – Waiting for Happiness (2002), won the FIPRESCI award at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival. His features Bamako (2006) and Timbuktu (2014) were widely acclaimed, with the latter being selected to compete for the Palme d'Or and nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
The young Franco-Senegalese director Ramata-Toulaye Sy is also one of the special guests of this edition, debuting her film in Brazil at the Mostra de Cinemas Africanos. Banel & Adama (2023) is a Senegalese tale that follows a young couple from a small village confronted by their community's conventions. This is the director's first feature film, which has already attracted attention and competed for the Palme d'Or at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
In addition to participating in the premiere sessions of their films, the filmmakers will engage in programmes that include debates with the audience and discussion panels on African cinema and exchange with Brazil.
All films are rated PG-14 unless otherwise stated.
