Mostra de Cinemas Africanos Promotes Unprecedented Encounter in Brazil Between African and Brazilian Audiovisual Professionals
The Brazil-Africa Audiovisual Encounters take place in September in Salvador, bringing together professionals from Brazil and eleven African countries.
Between September 19 and 22, 2024, the Mostra de Cinemas Africanos will host the first edition of the Brazil-Africa Audiovisual Encounters, iniciativa que fomenta parcerias e colaborações entre o cinema africano e o brasileiro. O evento reúne mais de 50 profissionais de ambos os lados do Atlântico Sul e busca criar um espaço propício para a colaboração, onde conhecimentos e experiências possam ser trocados para impulsionar as indústrias cinematográficas dos dois territórios. The programme is structured around four key pillars: Research, Production, Distribution, and Training. Specialists from Brazil and Africa will share insights and promote partnerships, aiming to further strengthen and expand the reach of African and Brazilian cinema. Over four days, the event will feature intensive activities including debates sessions, presentations by film professionals, and a forum dedicated to discussing sustainable cooperation between Brazil and Africa in the creative industry, with a particular focus on cinema.
Participants will include executive producers, directors of film labs, and professionals dedicated to nurturing the next generation of African and Brazilian filmmakers, as well as representatives from film festivals and markets. The public is invited to register free of charge, subject to the availability of seats for each activity.
According to Romeo Umulisa, coordinator of the Africa programming of the Encounters, expectations for the event are high. The Rwandan producer, active in both Rwanda and Germany, asserts that “this collaboration has the potential to not only enrich cinematic storytelling but also to strengthen cultural ties between Brazil and Africa, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of our shared heritage”.
The African guests hail from various regions of the continent, representing 11 countries: South Africa, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Nigeria, Kenya, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Senegal, and Uganda. On the Brazilian side, organizations such as Projeto Paradiso, Matapi, Apan, NordesteLAB, and Sesc São Paulo will participate in the programme, which is coordinated by Rafael Sampaio (BrLab) and Júlia Alves (Quarta-Feira Filmes).
