Short Course Reflects on Memories and Traumas of Colonial Violence Through African Cinema
The activity is facilitated by Emi Koide, who is also part of the film curation team for the special programme “The Right to Art, Land, and Mourning” during Mostra de Cinemas Africanos 2024.
The Mostra de Cinemas Africanos is holding the short course “Restituting Images, Stories – Memories and Cinemas,” facilitated by Emi Koide, a professor at the Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia (UFRB). The activity will take place on September 21st, , from 10:00 AM to 12:30 PM , and from 2:00 PM to 4:30 PM, at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Bahia (MAC) . It offers a profound reflection on the relationships between African cinema, memory, and colonial and resistance histories.
The course is part of the special programme “The Right to Art, Land, and Mourning,” which integrates a selection of films presented at Mostra de Cinemas Africanos 2024. Curated by Ana Camila Esteves, Gabriela Almeida, and Emi Koide, this session features short and feature-length documentaries that explore, in different ways, the trauma and mourning of colonial violence and the right to restitution of objects, works of art, and human remains.
During the course, Emi Koide will propose a discussion on the decolonization of museums and the restitution of cultural assets, highlighting the return of these works to their communities of origin as a form of cultural emancipation.
“Since the African independence struggles of the 1950s, there have been numerous demands for the restitution of various cultural assets, as well as human remains – as seen in the film The Empty Grave (2024) by Agnes Lisa Wegner and Cece Mlay – by African groups and nations to Euro-American museums. Countless objects, but also images, sounds, and moving images were looted and appropriated to form museum collections. We propose to reflect on memories and traumas intertwined with the imperial coloniality that marks these histories.”
The Mostra de Cinemas Africanos in Salvador-Bahia has financial support from the State Government, through the Fundo de Cultura, the Treasury Department, and the Secretary of Culture of Bahia.
